Should we get a train pass?

Two senior citizens accustomed to traveling independently. We fly into Rome, then travel to Florence, Bologna, Ravenna, Anacona, ferry to Split, spend a week in Croatia, then ferry back to Anacona and travel back to Rome to fly home. We will spend 3 weeks. We do not want to rent a car this trip but prefer train and ferry. Is there a train pass for two seniors traveling together. One of us has a EU passport.

Nope, no pass makes sense. There are a few major train routes on your itinerary, where, if you want to lock yourselves in to a particular train and schedule, well in advance, you could get substantial savings on non-refundable and non-changeable tickets. Otherwise just pay as you go, and get your tickets a little in advance of when you travel. But try not to leave that until just minutes before you travel, or you may find delays in buying the tickets keep you from actually catching the train you want. Sounds like a great trip!

meconomos, To answer your question "Please - what is the website that maps a route for cities that you input??? Thanks." -yes lots.

Many people on this forum recommend http://www.rome2rio.com/ but I haven't used it myself so I haven't got an opinion.

If you are looking for trains and ferries, most countries have a national railway company which has a website which usually includes all train and ferry companies in the country. These list trains and in most cases allow you to buy tickets They vary in usability. Personally I think voyages-sncf.com (French Railways site) wins an award for user-hostility. The Italian site is http://www.trenitalia.com/

But, the star of the show is the German railways site, http://www.bahn.de/
As well as German railways timetables, this also has the timetables of nearly every national railway company in Europe loaded. It is missing some local railway companies, and is not always updated with short-term timetable changes. It only gives prices, and only sells tickets for trips in, to or from Germany. But if you want to find out how to get from Sarajevo to Stratford-upon-Avon, or Barcelona to Bremen, this is your site.
