Shorter Days In March

Hello. I am just beginning my search of tours and tour dates. Just wondering what I would be missing by booking a trip when there is not as much sun light.

I like March in Italy for cooler temps and fewer crowds. I've never thought daylight time was short enough to be problematic. Mid-winter would be another story.

I was in Italy March of 2023. I thought it was a great time to be there. There was plenty of daylight for me + fewer crowds.

Florence
March 1
Civic Twilight start: 6:23am
Sunrise: 6:51am
Sunset: 6:03pm
Civil Twilight end: 6:32pm
(basically you have light from 6:23am to 6:32pm)

March 28 (last day of Standard time)
Civic Twilight start: 5:35am
Sunrise: 6:04am
Sunset: 6:36pm
Civil Twilight end: 7:05pm
(basically you have light from 5:35am to 7:05pm)

In Rome Sunset will be just about 5 min earlier.

Starting March 29, Daylight Savings begins, therefore move 1 hour forward)

Sunset at Standard Time in March is at the same time as Sunset at Daylight time on the second half of October.

I like going in late March or early April, after the clocks have already changed, so the sunset isn’t too early and the temperatures are comfortable.

March 21st daylight is the same as August 21st daylight.

You sure about that?

I see that Mar 21 and Sept 21 have near equal daylight hours.

I'll echo the "love March" crowd. I did the Venice, Florence, Rome tour two years ago in March and thought the weather was perfect. Didn't even think about daylight. Seemed like we had plenty. If you're up early and sightseeing all day, you can pack a lot in before 6:30, and by that point, most of us are ready for dinner, a concert, or gelato.

Joe32F is correct, as March 20 and September 20 (approx) are the equinoxes when there is 12 hours of day and 12 of night anywhere in the world.

I have been to Italy several times in February and March. The amount of light really does not bother me, by then, at home, I am used to it, and the days slowly lengthening make it more bearable.

I do though like to focus more on cities at that time, the crowds typically have been more manageable, and a sunny day really puts everyone in a good mood.
