Short visit in February - Venice and ??

The basic plan is to be in Venice for the 1st weekend of Carnivale (Feb 6-9) and then fly from Bologna to Madrid for about 2 weeks in Spain. I can fly only into Milan (preferred) or Rome.

Suggestions please for a couple of days before Venice (been to Milan and Verona). Also, any recommendations for a day or two after Venice that has easy access to the Bologna airport? If not, I'll happily spend a day in Bologna and then continue on to Spain.

For before Venice, look at Padova. For after Venice near Bologna, look at Ferrara. I liked both of these cities a lot, with the caveat that I don't know what they are like in February (they're GREAT in September!)

Ravenna is also a possibility for the Bologna sector. Amazing mosaics and some Roman stuff too.
