My husband and I are going to Italy in June and are considering renting a car on our way out of Florence, driving around Tuscany for the day (can't remember the route that Rick's guidebook recommends but that's probably what we'll do) and then staying one night in some Tuscan town before heading to Rome. Any recommendations for what town to stay in? I was thinking Montalcino but would love to hear what others think.
Orvieto...there is a Hertz office there, across from the train station, but I would keep the car and stay overnight (or two) up in the hills at Antica Olivaia, one of the best B&B's ever! Daniela and Marco are the best innkeepers, and the place is exceptional. Check it out on Trip Advisor. Cannot wait to go back.

Only one day? Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano are near each other with the last one being nearer the highway south. Siena is a wonderful city to explore. Or for a smaller Tuscan town experience look at Panzano or Radda. You should drive south on the Chiantigiana, Historic Route 22 towards beautiful Siena. Continue on, if you wish, to stay in one of the towns farther south, those mentioned in my first sentence. Are you dropping the car off in Rome or at FCO? You can also drop off in Orvieto( in Umbria not Tuscany) and stay there overnight, take train to Rome.
