Short trip to Amalfi from Rome? is this realistic?

I may be able to tack 3 extra days onto a 13 day trip (itinerary similar to Ricks "Italy my way" tour) starting in Venice and flying out of Rome. I would love to see the Amalfi coast but I was wondering if 3 days would be too rushed given that 2 of the 3 days will be travel days to and from Rome (so only 2 nights in Amalfi area).

From Rome to the Amalfi Coast will take you about 3.5hrs each way assuming that you take the really fast Trenitalia or Italo train to and from Naples. If you leave really early in the morning, you could be in Sorrento by 10:30am. First fast train out of Rome for Naples departs at 7:35am. It's another hour to get down to Amalfi on the SITAsud bus.

colleen,

Could you clarify which parts of the "Amalfi coast" you specifically want to see? As Larry mentioned, it's very easy to travel from Rome to Sorrento using the Freccia high speed trains and then the Circumvesuviana commuter train. Sorrento makes a great home base for exploring that area, and you could also take a day trip to Capri if desired.

If you have 3 nights to spend in Sorrento, I think it is worthwhile to go. But get an early start as mentioned above. If only two nights, I think I'd skip the extra location change and stay in Rome. There's never enough time in Rome!

Just to be clear, Sorrento is not on the Amalfi Coast. Another hour on a bus (or in a car) will place you in Positano, Praiano, Amalfi or Ravello, all beautiful and all on the Amalfi Coast. You could walk from some of the small towns to others.

In my opinion Sorrento is overrun with tourists in high season. I've been there many times, slightly off season makes a big difference.
