They want to rent a car. CT first, 2 days, Florence, 2 days, somewhere?,and Rome. Any suggestions?

Margaret, the reality is that they only have 7 full days: not enough quality time for Milan/Monza, Cinque Terre, Florence and Rome let ALONE another location. Aside from Monza (which I know nothing about) I also wouldn't rent a car as it would be useless for the CT, Florence and Rome. With 7 full days + one partial arrival day, most of us would recommend just two locations or three at most. Short timetables beg for fewer moves to reduce the time spent packing/unpacking/checking in and out/sitting on transport/etc. in favor of actually SEEING some of Italy.
I'm curious why Monza?
Kathy had given good advice. No more than two locations in 8 nights unless they are really close together and depending on how large the locations are. You have two big ones: Florence and Rome. You can squeeze in the Cinque Terre at the risk of not doing the others well, but certainly, you should not add the 4th location.
Perhaps on arrival in Milan you can go directly to the Cinque Terre for 2 nights (1 day), then Florence for 3 (2 full days) and Roma for 3 (2 full days). No need for a car at all. In fact, it is a liability in all three locations. All locations will be hot and crowded in August so set your expectations accordingly. You cannot rush.
Editing to add that I have twice told friends not to rent a car, that it was going to be a problem for their respective itineraries. Neither listened and after the trips they were big enough to say "You were right. What a hassle." It's not America. A car is not necessary for this itinerary.

Great advice from Laurel, who has lived in Italy so has lotsa valuable firsthand experience. :O)
Trains will get from the A's to B's on your list so much faster, and without parking and ZTL-dodging headaches/potential expense.
I agree with Kathy. Way too short of a trip. Met them in Milano Centrale, rome2rio says it's about 20 minutes by train from Monza-Milan. Go directly to Florence spend 4 nites.
Remember their first day will probably be in a jet lagged haze. On day 1, just wander Florence. Day 2, see some sights. Day 3, explore more of Florence. Day 4, do a day trip to Tuscany see if any of these interest them.

or 😬 Take the 5 hour round trip train ride to the CT.
The CT. Day 5, head to Rome by train 90 minutes spend 3 nites.
A car for first timers could be an expensive learning curve.
Read and download their PDF.

hey margaret
wow a car is of no use ( if you do make sure you get an IDP from AAA), in cinque terre florence or rome. the ZTL zones, no cars allowed and if you do a big fine, where to park and how much and how far? traveling during high season, lots of people, the summer heat, do you have rooms booked, how long is a train ride, the inside of trains is what husband will be seeing, not a fun trip. sorry to burst everyone's bubble but you and them are expecting too much in a little time, take a chill pill, like riding a magic carpet or parting the red sea. train from milan to florence 3-4 days and florence to rome 3-4 days, enjoy the cities, stop for a glass of wine, people watch, relax, know what you want to see and buy your tickets early for entrance, read up how long wait times are, pack a lot of patience without frustration. you only have a month until you leave. get a guide book, do a search here on the forums for these areas. is your flight arriving 8/3 from USA (don't forget jetlag), then you travel to monza for how many days then these cities you have mentioned? like kathy why monza? just putting my 3 cents in here have a happy travels.
aloha
To all, I believe you! We are flying into Milano on 8/3, am Going to home of my friends who live in Sovico, no one knows, but nearby Monza is familiar. Agree, agree. They should slow down. wander and see, sit and sip. But they are Y O U N G
Thanks to all
