short daytrips from Volterra?

Four of us are planning a trip for next April / May.

I'm pondering staying in Volterra for 3 nights
We have Rick;s book, so we know of the major towns that we can visit.

One person in our group (of 4) thinks an hour is too long, given the round trip - 2 hours
1) Are there other interesting towns/sites near Volterra that I should research for us to day-trip to?
2) Also, are there good, interesting, unique parks to visit in that area?

I just discovered the Baratti Archeological Park. It is 1.25 hours away - may be too long a ride.
3) I'm wondering if a day-trip to the coast would be good. Perhaps driving a loop, so not back-tracking?

Thanks

Will you be staying elsewhere before or after Volterra? Without knowing that, it is difficult to answer your question.

It is not as central for day trips as towns in Chianti or Val d’Orcia areas are. I like Volterra but would bot stay there for that reason.

Thank you for responses. I'm at a funeral, so just a quick note:
We're going north to south, (still early in planning) - Florence and then Siena.

After Siena, I think we'll do Rick's Tuscany Drive - but not sleeping anywhere there, unless we skip the western towns.

If we rent a car for a day or two before heading south (via car), is Siena easy enough to do a few day trips from (i.e. is the traffic OK).
OR should we be north of Siena if we want to go to Voltera and San G (and probably elsewhere?)

San Gimignano is close and definitely worth a visit and a drive-around. We did a day trip to Volterra from Lucca, so you could do the opposite. Lucca is a charming town. My favourite thing to do is rent a bike and ride around the top of the wall, and then go to Pizza Felice for 100 grams of pizza (it's a hole in the wall, not a full service restaurant).

I generally don't find the traffic in Tuscany to be too bad except when you get near Florence.
