shore excursions in Italy

We are taking a Mediterranean cruise in late May/early June with stops in the ports of Livorno, Civitavecchia, and Naples. The shore excursions available from the cruise line range from the moderately expensive to the ridiculously expensive. Are there other options? Will we be able to get off the boat and find reputable local guides for a small group at reasonable prices?

For Civitavecchia there is a train station about a half mile from the cruise port. You can easily take the train (4.50 euros each) into Rome. The trip takes about an hour. From there, with map in hand, just head to the colosseum (about a 15 minute walk). The sites in Rome are very close to each other so you should be able to cover a lot of the city in the few hours you'll have. If you wish to hire a guide, see if someone can meet you at the termini station in Rome instead of taking you to and from the port. This will save you a ton of money! Donna

Mike I'm not real sure of the name of the pass but I understand there is a pass that is round trip from the port train station to Rome plus covers all in city bus and metro. It may be the BIG pass-4euro, almost sounds too good. If you plan on hitting the Vatician first, get off the train at the San Pietro station not Central.

Mike, try cruisecritic.com and look for the ports on your cruise iitinerary. Some good tips and ideas there and also a message board, totally inhabited by cruise fans.
