Shore excursions from Livorno

We are going to be on a cruise in November that stops in Livorno Italy. Because the ship stays overnight in the port we actually have two days for shore excursions. We are obviously going to Florence one day. Any recommendations for the second day?

Livorno >Pisa takes as little as 12-15 minutes by train. Lucca takes about an hour.

But there's also a lot to see just in Florence so you might consider booking a room/staying the night so as to have part of Day 2 for more exploring? Tickets to the major museums - or at least the Uffizi, anyway - should be purchased in advance, and do be aware of which days the museums are closed.

When can you disembark? When do you have to be back on board? Depending on that, you may not have two days, but more like a little more than a day.

For instance, if your ship docks at 8:00 am, by the time you disembark and get transportation to Florence, it will be lunchtime. If you have to be back on board the next evening, you'll have to leave no later than 4:00.

I like Kathy's suggestion of booking a night in Florence and spending what little time you have in the city.

Our ship "arrives" in Livorno at 0800 but I'm not sure when we can disembark (I'll have to get more precise info from the cruise line) but it stays in Livorno overnight so we can return any time. It leaves Livorno at 1800 the next day.

If your ship arrives in Livorno at 0800, you will likely be able to disembark after 0900 (depending on the "pecking" order).

We've stopped in Livorno twice, and as a contrast to busy Florence, we very much enjoyed visiting Lucca - the old town is a beautiful walled city (you can walk or bike on top of the wide walls), lovely narrow pedestrianized cobblestone streets, wonderful smaller churches, and the home of Puccini if that interests you. Great gelato there too! It's a great walking destination - I would happily return to Lucca!

BTW, Livorno has a beautiful seaside plaza.
