We are going to be stopping in Naples on a cruise in November. I thought that we had a shore excursion arranged (Pompeii/Amalfi coast) but it fell through. I would appreciate any recommendations for shore excursions and tour operators.
Take the circumvesiana train from Naples to Pompeii. Hire a guide at the park entrance.
I also think a visit to Pompeii would be fantastic. Since you are at the cruise port, there is a convenient CitySighting shuttle bus that picks you up at the port and takes you to Pompeii. At the site you can hire a guide or use Rick's free audio tour included in his Audio Europe smartphone app.
We stopped there on a cruise a few years ago in late December and used Rome in Limo. https://www.romeinlimo.com/
Our driver/guide was outstanding-we booked a trip where we were supposed to go to Pompeii, then Sorrento for lunch and a quick walk around, then back to Naples for the Archeological museum. I say supposed to because it was New Year's Eve and the museum closed early. Our driver/guide suggested stopping at Herculaneum instead so we did two ruins in one day. The sheer size of Pompeii was amazing and our hired guide (this was extra but our driver was not a licensed guide to Pompeii) was excellent. In Herculaneum, the size of the excavation was smaller but the remains of homes, furniture and people were much better preserved. The lunch was not included in the price but we went to a place that the limo driver took us to. The food and service were great and well worth it. Our driver was very knowledgeable and a lot of fun. I highly recommend them. We used them in Rome as well. They were a little pricey but we still talk about how great both days were.
