Shore Excursion from Livorno to Ciinque Terre

Our Azamara cruise ship stops in Livorno for 12 hours. They do not offer an excursion to Cinque Terre. My Rick Steves' MEDITERRANEAN CRUISE PORTS book does not mention the best way to get to Cinque Terre. Any recommendations, preferably Rick Steves' referrals? It's one of our "must-sees"! (We've already been to Florence and Pisa.) Thanks, guys!

lp,

It's a bit late and I'm not thinking too clearly, but this is one route that you could use.....

  • From the Port of Livorno, take a Taxi to Livorno Centrale station. Using a Kiosk or the staffed ticket office, buy tickets to Riomaggiore (or whichever C.T. town you want to visit first).
  • Travel by train to Riomaggiore (the closest of the five C.T. towns). The trip will be 1.5 - 2 hours, depending on which train you connect with. You can see all the solutions on the Trenitalia website.
  • Use the local trains to get to whichever of the towns you want to visit. You could also start in Monterosso, and work your way back to Riomaggiore and then Livorno.

If you happen to be in Monterosso at lunch time, there are lots of nice restaurants to choose from. I'd highly recommend Cantina di Miky, which is not far from the train station (I believe they're closed Wednesdays). They have a nice patio overlooking the ocean, where you can have a fine meal and of course a glass of Vino to enjoy the occasion.

What time does your ship depart? Don't be late!

Thanks, Ken. We arrive at 7:30am and depart at 8:30pm. You're right - our biggest fear is missing the boat!
