Shopping in Rome

I am going on a day trip to Rome. I have a tour of the Vatican planned out somy time is booked from 2:30 till about 4. Before that I want to see as much as I can of the Colessum and w.e I can fit in. BUT, I must shop a little in Rome. I promised myself not to leave Italy without 3 things, one of which is a practical matter. I need another suitcase. I want to buy some leather good (maybe a bag) and a nice dress. Please save me some of my limited time and advise where to buy.

One day in the Eternal City- 90 minutes for the Vatican- a drive-by of the Col. The rest for shopping? You will find better buys in Manhattan, a quick ferry ride from your home. Little tear rolling down my cheek.......

Polina,
So much of this depends on your personal taste, your age, your size, etc. When we were leaving the Vatican, there were several shops on side streets leaving the Vatican and on the way to the Metro station, some had some really fashionable dresses that appeared nice quality...........but they were most appropriate for a young person or a petite person....that might be you? Didn't notice a lot of leather anywhere (noticed that more in Florence on a previous trip), but I'm sure there are places. I'd suggest asking your hotel concierge once you arrive in Rome. Concierge (or front desk staff) will be able to point you in the right direction for your age/tastes/budget. If you are outgoing, you might even ask some of the locals where they like to shop, especially those that appear to have your same fashion taste. Remember, everything you buy will have a much higher net cost, because of the low value of our $ to the euro.

Unfortunately Rome is not the best place in Italy for leather goods but they do exist. I always save that part of the shopping list for a little farther north. Maybe someone else here can help with that. If you are looking for the high end stuff, Via Condotti is it. Don't let the cheaper Euro price tag fool you though. It ends up the same $ in dollars. I also haven't found anything that I couldn't buy right here in Atlanta too. For cute dresses, Rome is a gold mine. There are stores on every corner and in every price range. My sister is a size 12 and had a tough time finding anything though.

Where are you day-tripping from Polina? I found a great leather store in Montalcino with good seletion, quality and prices. Siena is full of fine leather goods as well. Florence is the center of the leather products universe, in Italy.
