My husband, in-laws, and I are going to be in Italy for two weeks over Christmas. We are starting our trip in Florence Sat Dec 21- Mon Dec. 23., moving to Cortona Dec.23-27, Rome Dec. 27-29, and Positano Dec.29-Jan. 4. Are the local areas to shop usually closed during this time? We are using the 2014 Italy guide to plan all our museum trips but are unsure of shop hours during this time.

In the days just before Xmas almost all shops will be open, no matter if it is Sunday. On Xmas day and 26th everything will shut up but restaurants. Saturday 27th open. Sunday 28th - even shops that are usually open on Sunday may close to recoup extra working time before Xmas. On January 1st everything comes to a standstill.
