Shopping for knock-offs

When we were in NY we had a great time shopping for know-off purses in Chinatown. I hear they have similar street selling in major cities in Italy but one guidebook said if caught the buyer is the one punished not the seller. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

I don't have any experience with this, but I find unfair for the buyers to get in trouble.
I never buy fakes, nor from an outrageously priced designers.

We were in Venice last year where there were hords of folks selling knock off purses and lots of police standing around ready to arrest people who buy them. The police were also handing out fliers (in English) warning tourists not to buy blackmarket items. I think the fine was 10,000E if you get caught buying a knockoff. It would make for an expensive vacation.
