We will be in Switzerland (mainly hiking and Bern,Lucerne,Zermatt) for 12 days and in Italy (Milan, Venice,Florence,Rome, and Pompeii) for 10 days. I am fretting what to take for shoes - hiking boots are a must. Can I get away with just a pair of casual sandals (leather Tevas or Birkenstocks) or should I put in another pair of walking shoes? I am really trying to travel light and shoes are so bulky.
What month? If you are traveling in spring/summer, or early fall you can get away with just a pair of sandals. I only wear my Chaco sandals when I travel - they have a toe loop and a heel strap, so are very secure. Obviously wear your hiking boots on the plane (pain through security, but saves a lot of space/weight in luggage)
Worst case, if it's cold, rainy, you'll put the hiking boots back on for that day...otherwise, you can get away IMO with just a pair of sandals for your other shoes.
you need walking shoes. If you have an olser pair take then then toss them after you are thru. I have done this many times myself.
