It's very confusing trying to figure out the best shoes for walking. I was thinking of wearing my sketchers as I wore them all over Washington D.C. and was fine. Everyone talks about the cobblestone streets so now I'm not sure what the best shoe is.
Thanks much
This is a frequently discussed item. Current discussion running under General Europe since this a subject not restricted to Italy. There is also a whole subsection devoted to this topic. See - http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/graffiti92.html Washington streets are relatively smooth and flat. Cobblestone streets and rough concrete put a premium on thick soles. Our preference is for a shoe with a thick, well cushioned sole. And, of course, well broken in.
I wear my Sketcher Shape-ups exclusively and find them to be fantastic on cobblestones. My feet never hurt or get tired, even after walking for 6-7 hours.
When I was younger I could take on those cobblestones in a pair of ballet flats, but I wouldn't try it now. Sketchers sound great. What is helpful to me is a bit of extra (somewhat flexible) padding between my feet and the cobblestones.
Roberta,
I have flat feet and 55 - so a lot of walking can be very tiring - (not to me, but to my feet) - my teens got me a pair of Chacos last year and while at first I wasn't sure about the style for my age - their comfort has won me over - I can walk all day and be fine - and that is saying a lot. - They will be my shoe of choice for my trip later this year.
My daughter and I wore sandals and my sister wore sneakers. Our feet did hurt at all and we walked in the morning till night
Did Not Hurt
Ecco shoes are the best for the streets in Italy.
I have ordered Lands End All Weather Mocs. I don't have personal experience with them yet but my sister has two pairs and loves them. They also got great reviews on line. The best part, they are only $45.00.
Thanks for all your suggestions. I'll be checking them out.
I've tried many different pairs/brands and found that Born was the most comfortable for me!
