Does anyone out there know if you have to wear close-toed shoes at the Vatican? I have read that you need to keep your arms covered and that your skirt should cover your knees, but I can't find any info on shoes. I ask because it will be warm while we're there, and I would like to wear my walking sandals as much as possible. Any advice would be a huge help! Thanks!
Sandals are fine -- flipflops, doesn't seem to matter. We also saw plenty of above the knee shorts and skirts that got through -- not super short, but definitely above the knee. Seemed more strict on the arms.
Any type of shoe is fine. They don't really care. Don't take the chance with clothing that doesn't fit the guidelines. Knees and shoulders should be covered or you risk being denied entry. Some people do get through but for the most part the rules are enforced. Donna
We occasionally get reports of some people in the basilica that don't fit the official dress code (esp. shorts that are a little above the knee on women, or shorts of any kind on men). We have no way of knowing how those people managed to slip by, but you can rest assured that for every one of those that got through, there are scores more that were turned away and are super unhappy about it. But, yeah, sandals are fine. They were good enough for Jesus, right? :-)
SHOULDERS most important! I thought I had mine covered, was refused entry, and had to run around and buy a scarf to tie around my shoulders. They really mean short sleeves -- I was sleeveless, but not strappy, so I considered my shoulders covered. I'd not take any chances re skirt length either, because it all depends on the guard who clears you for entry.
Another day I might have gotten in, but on this day, I held up my husband and the other couple traveling with us while I ran around trying to find a scarf. Shoes -- no prob! BTW, it is AMAZING!!! Make sure you do the museum tour and rent the earphones or use RS podcast. Sistene, unbelievable!
