Shipping stuff home from Italy

My suitcases which were small carry-ons were way too heavy--small but dang they weighed a lot. Now I want to ship some stuff home before I head to Calabria to meet family.

I am shipping through Mailboxes Etc. At first, I was just going to ship back clothes I am not going to use to make room for some gifts to bring for them and make it easier switching trains and lighter for my flight back to Rome from Reggio Calabria. Now I would also like to throw in some cheap souvenirs I bought: stationary, some Panettone, sketchbook, a scarf--throw in basically everything that fits that I don't need besides valuables like my laptop etc.  Is that going to be an issue with customs? I just need to travel MUCH lighter.  Thank you. I  head over to Mailboxes etc. on Friday.

It should not be an issue with Customs for your clothing and purchases unless the value of the purchases exceeds the limit. However, I would never ship a valuable item like a laptop with all of your info on it. (I am not clear from your statement that you actually plan to ship the laptop but want to make sure you know that would not be a great idea.)

MailBoxes, Etc will walk you through it all, at least that was my experience with them in Rome.

Not as long as the proper forms are completed. The shipping company should know what to do. We used the Italian post to ship some art work back with no problems. However, I would photograph everything with my phone --- just in case.

Thank you. I am carrying my laptop with me. OK that is great. I can get rid of most stuff since it will be warmer in Calabria. Thank you.

We shipped at box home from Como when we were 5 days into our trip and we were glad we did. We used Mailboxes Etc and it went very smoothly. We shipped a big assortment of things including extra clothes as it was much hotter than our previous trip even though it was at the same time of year, souvenirs and even the Jubilee music box biscuit tin I bought at Fortnum and Mason during our LHR layover. No problems with the box and it was home well before we were. It's not cheap but it is well worth it to lighten up.

Thank you! Heading over to Mailboxes today. It's been kind of cold damp in Siena but Calabria will be hot.

I used mailboxes a few weeks ago. Very knowledgeable and trustworthy. I sent 2 shipments back from Bologna, parmesan cheese of course, second box more cheese and face cream from the Italian skin care line I like and whatever else I didn't want to carry.
Both shipments arrived within 5 days, one in 3!
The mailboxe agent handled all the forms needed for US, no nothing I needed to add

In general shipping small quantities of wares and food is quite easy: you only need to declare it for custom clearance. Usually international delivers have some quite easy forms. For little quantity (what is reasonable for "personal use and little gifts") they only check that there isn't nothing prohibited. Check this list to be sure: https://www.cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/prohibited-and-restricted-items . For food the most important is avoid meat, honey and fresh cheeses.
