We will be in Rome in September and I plan to purchase a lot of clothes and gifts. Is there a reasonabled priced way to send things home rather than trust the airlines with my suitcases?

The short answer is NO!!!! I once paid for excess baggage on my airline as it was cheaper than mailing!!!
I don't know why people are so afraid of checking their bags.... in over 40 years of flying home from Europe, I have NEVER had a bag lost.
