What is the most cost effective and safe way to ship a large size luggage from Milan, Italy to the US? What have others experienced?

The most cost effective will be the Italian Post. Some folks like to knock the Italian postal system but we have used it with good success. It will still be expensive. Any of the other delivery services will be even more expensive so the value of what you are sending needs to be substantial. To get an idea of the expense, just go on any the delivery services web sites and run a fake mailing. That will give you the price.

A lot of ex-pats use Send My Bag. We used them for a very large suitcase from the US to France. It was door-to-door pick-up and delivery. They handled the custom's declaration. The actual carrier they used was DHL. Their base is in England. We paid about $85 US.

We recently took a Tauck tour. Those folks are the antithesis of packing light! If there were steamer trunks they’d have them-their bags were huge and numerous (and they dressed well!). Because of fear of lost luggage several used Luggage Forward and were pleased with the service and the cost.

I've used Send My Bag to send a bag from the UK to the US. Fast, effecient, and they took care of everything. Door to Door.

Not the cheapest but reliable.

My experience with the Italian Postal Service is that it’ll take a good long time to reach your destination. Not sure about the pricing.

And we've noticed a real slowdown with mail from the US. Letters (yes, we still get snail mail occasionally) are taking twice as long. I think it's happening on the US end.
