Our friends who will be travelling to Italy with us in May would like to be able to ship items home via his business FEDEX account. Are there any problems using Fedex from Italy? I know that shipping Fedex to Canada from the US triggers extra brokerage fees. Are there any special considerations in using FEDEX from Italy?
Why not call FEDEX and ask your questions. It will help you to talk with an expert. Be sure to ask about any duties the Italian government places on goods shipped out.
Carl, I think duties are usually assessed by the country of destination.
Thanks, but I was looking for some feedback from anyone who has actually used Fedex for shipping. We will of course contact Fedex, but was hoping for some actual experience.
Shipping via Fedex from anywhere outside the U-S will trigger those atrocious brokers' fees. I had a small part shipped in from France and the brokers' fees were almost as much as the part was worth. I stick to national postal services now....their expedited services are almost as fast as Fedex et al, and, at least for Canada Post, the brokerage fee is a flat $5.00
maggie,
I've found that FedEx is a faster option than using the postal service, but as the others mentioned the Brokerage Fees can be exorbitant! This also applies to UPS and other similar firms.
In addition to Brokerage, there's the issue of Duty and Taxes that may be levied on the items. If these are personal items that you left home with, you may have to prove that they weren't acquired in Europe. If these are "souvenirs" or other items that were purchased on the trip, they will be subject to the normal exemption limits levied by the government. If you're over your limit, you'll be paying applicable duty on the "over limit" amount, which will be in addition to the Brokerage Fees!
You might want to contact your local Customs office for more specific details.
Happy travels!
