Is a taxi or transportation required at the following ports in Italy: Messina, Naples Pompeii, Civitavecchia Rome, Livorno Florence Pisa. We want to do some excursions but like to explore cities on our own as well. Any suggestions on where to visit?

I don’t know about Messina but you’ll need transportation at Naples, Civitavecchia and Livorno in order to get to those other places. Pisa is a half hour or so drive from Livorno and Florence is another hour drive; Pompei is a similar drive from Naples and Rome from Civitavecchia. You can arrange taxi / train / car transportation on your own or see if the ship offers a bare bones option where they just drive you to a drop off point and thing pick you back up from there. The benefit of a ship excursion is that along as you’re with the group the ship won’t leave you if something happens and your return is delayed. Good luck!
