Sheraton Roma Hotel

I will be visiting Rome in June and was able to have a family member extend a fabulous employee rate of $75.00 US a night for a double room. The hotel provides a shuttle from FCO airport which is convenient. The only downfall is that the hotel is located 20 minutes from the city center. The hotel does provide a continuous shuttle service daily to the city center and it is also my understanding there there is a train station across the street which would be another option. We will be taking a mediterranean cruise and have decided to spend 5 days in rome so that we have time to see all the sites prior to boarding the cruise. I know that we cannot beat the price, however, I would like to know how huge of an inconvenience this would be to be away from the city center. Our goal is to take the shuttle into the city center each morning with most likely doing all the sites with a return back to the hotel after dinner.

We were also considering staying in Rome for 3 days and then moving to Sorrento for an overnighght stay so that we have the opportunity to do Pompeii. The cruise will be stopping in Naples, however, we really wanted to take the hydrofoil to Capri as we were not sure if we would be able to do Capri and Pompeii in the 10 hours we will be in port. We can also do a day trip to Pompeii just to get out of the city. Not sure if Sorrento is a must see while in that area. I figured if we spent an overnight in Sorrento that perhaps we can take a bus tour of the Amalfi Coast.

Any suggestions and feedback on the above is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You do need to get to Civitavechia for the cruise. That is about 50 miles from Rome, about an hour via train. You will need to check if you can board the train to Civit.. across from the hotel. If not you will need to come to Termini. I think you asked the question and NO you cannot do both Capri and Pompeii in the same day.

Wanda, what Sheraton property are you staying at? That way we can figure out metro/train accessibility.

Thank you so much for the feedback. I am indeed staying at the Sheraton Roma Hotel in the EUR district. Unfortunately the sister properties that are located in the city centre were not available at the employee rate.

We weighed in heavily on the disadvantage of not being in a downtown location. However, after running the numbers the savings was considerable and figured we can use the extra cash for spending money and excursions. I an also splitting the cost of the room with a friend.

We decided that perhaps we will just need to get an early start in the day. I am wondering if it would be faster to take the Metro instead of the shuttle bus.

Yes, I am aware that we wile need to get to Termini Station in order to take the trail to the port.

I am still unsure as to what to do in regards to Pompeii and Capri but do know that I would not mind taking a day trip out of Rome on the 4th day. I guess I need to realize that I am not going to be able to everything on my list on my first trip to italy. Pompeii is certainly on my list and think I am ok with saving Sorrento for a return to Italy.

In your opinion is Capri a good option vs. Sorrento and bus tour of the Amalfi Coast?
