I'm a novice traveler so will probably ask stupid questions. When Rick states an approximate amount for a taxi ride or a tour, is that a per person charge or would it be the cost of a shared ride/tour if there is more than one traveler? If there is an up charge, what could one expect?
The answer is different if you're talking a taxi ride or a tour group. I'm pretty sure that the taxi amount he mentions is for the ride, regardless of riders, although the size of the cab limits the number of riders. There might be a small additional charge per rider - I just can't remember. As for tours, it depends. Some tours charge per person, others (usually the tour guides) charge by the hour regardless of the number of people, though they will likely put a cap on the number. Happy travels.
My experience with the taxis is similar to the US. There will be a mileage/time charge between the two points, plus an extra charge for each passenger and, perhaps, a luggage charge which is not common in the US. And there will be situations where the fee is fixed. For example, the taxi from the airport to Rome is fixed a 40E for 1 to 4 persons plus luggage. Generally when Steves' refers to a guided tour it is most likely a single person fee unless it specifically references an hourly fee.
Taxi as mere transportation operates with a fixed charge + km fees. The fixed charge can be hefty, like in Amsterdam (€ 7,50). Some taxis will not take 4 passengers, only 3. And some will have surcharges for each piece of luggage. ===== On tours, it will vary a lot. It's better to check with each operator.
