Besides reading Rick's Travel News section, the Google News & Weather app on my phone (set to Padova, Florence & Rome) and struggling through Il Messaggero in Italian (Rome's daily paper), I'm enjoying numerous websites in English that I have not seen mentioned in the Forum. Within these are loads of information about what's happening in Italy, on every topic imaginable. One good source to follow is ANSA, the Italian News Service, Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata. It tends to be no nonsense and has very extensive coverage on many subjects from current Italian and world news to science and business and sports. There is an English version as well, so you can choose to read for info or for language skill.

Yay - another one - thanks Mike! Have seen clips from ANSA on other sites but didn't realize there was an entire English version.
