The only shopping I'm interested in doing on our trip will be for sewing notions (buttons & trims) and fabric while in Rome. I've searched the web and can't locate even a starting place. Any ideas? Thanks.

The previous poster is correct. You can find beautiful fabric trim and buttons at both fabric stores and shops that sell curtians. Just look in the less tourist areas. Look where Italians actually live and shop.

Just walking the streets I saw several fabric shops. I didn't go in, but it looked very interesting.
In Italy, fabrics are so beautiful...you should be able to find some stores with items you seek - like buttons, etc.
Why don't you ask at your hotel for info, I'm sure someone there will have some suggestions.
