4 of us are taking a cruise that will leave from Rome and then return to Citavecchia port. We want to get a tour set up or atleast transportation to Rome and spend the day sightseeing before we fly back to USA next day. Does anyone know if we can get transfers to Rome from the ship, rather than to the airport? I'm sure others have done the same thing. Would appreciate some guidance.
You can go on the port's website and get the website for taxi/shuttle services that will pick you up at your ship and take you into Rome. They can also give you a full tour of the city--for a price. You'd also do best to have the same taxi/shuttle service pick you up the next morning and take you directly to Rome FCO. You could take the Leonardo Express train from Termini to FCO, but at around $15 it's pretty expensive.
We took a local train into Rome, but getting out of the port and to the Civitavecchia train station was a pretty negative experience. Our hotel arranged a private car to take us to the airport @ 50 Euros.
The train station is near the port. It is about a 25 minute walk if I remember correctly. You can also take a cab to the station. We did this and spent extra days in Rome.
I see you are from Clark's Summit. I was born in Scranton and spent my youth in Great Bend. I really like the Clark Summit area and have friends living there.
Enjoy your trip.
A key issue will be where to store your luggage while seeing the sites? I would suggest a hotel between the Pantheon and the Forum, this way you can leave your luggage in lockup at the hotel in the morning and then go site seeing and come back in late afternoon for check in. This location would be easy walking distance to all the key sites, even the Vatican. If you could get tickets ahead of time for the colosseum and the forum it would save a lot of time wasted standing in line. The Pantheon is a must see but it can close early sometimes due to special events, so hit it early!
Romeinlimo is a private company that offers something like you want.
Check out romecabs. We used them on our cruise five years ago and they
are excellent.
Ditto for Rome Cabs. We can not say enough good things about them. It is a private car service and not a regular cab company. They do shuttles from the port to Rome and also do tours of Rome. Go to romecabs.com and see what you think. We usually send an email and they answer us with a quote within 24 hours. You do have to pay cash (Euros) at the end but not in advance.
Bob's Limo. We used them. Large van can easily hold up to 8 passengers plus all luggage. It was €150 for six of us.
