Just looking for rationale for best trip sequence:North to south, Milan Venice Florence Rome as opposed to South to North, Rome Florence Venice Milan....

What time of the year are you going? Will it be warmer at the onset of your trip, then start North to South, and vice versa). Are there any events in one city that you want to be sure to be able to attend? (limited exhibits, operas, etc.) Hotel availability? Those are the ones I can think of quickly.

Our direction is often influenced by the airports that give us the best flight options. The big cities often require heading to the airport 4 hours before the flight departs which can be quite early. Our next trip we are going South to North mainly to avoid flying out of Rome. FCO has been such an unpleasant experience the last couple of trips that we are trying to avoid it.

That was one of our concerns. We are weighing many factors including that Delta does not seem to have a non stop that time of year Milan to Atlanta. Thank you for the input... we shall keep exploring. We had such an incredible time in Italy thanks to the Italy guidebook by Rick Steves that we want to return!

That is such a narrow range that it really will not make any difference. I would check the airports to see if there was any dollar advantage to flying first into Milan or Rome. If talking Stockholm to Rome -- or even Paris -- that would be different.

We've traveled to Italy twice recently in mid-March, which is a great time of year to see the country. Bravo!

Maybe a little inclement weather but virtually no tourists, especially during the week. The only exceptions are weekends in Florence with the overseas college kids and their parents kind of bolloxes things up.

Chances are the difference in temps will be minimal, not like the US where there are wide swings in temps vertically. That being said, might as well give it a shot. Fly into Rome, then Florence, Venice & fly out of Milan.

Grazie Mille to all- I was trying to avoid backtracking and maximize our time in each city. I feel comfortable now just seeking the best flights either way. I really appreciate the guidance.
