September trip to Venice via Rome

Hello! I used to live near in Naples, over 15 years ago. A group of us are going on a royal Caribbean cruise which ends in Civitavecchia. Loosely stated we plan to spend about 48 hours in Rome, then just two of us will continue the trip - we will travel down to Sperlonga for a couple of days, then spend a few days traveling to end in Venice.

My first set of questions is about Rome, I would like to do the after hours tour of the Colosseum. Which tour company is best for this? Also, the Trevi Fountain… have they really put up lines to see it? I was considering staying at the Hotel Fontana because the Trevi has always been a favorite of mine. I know that area can get very crowded and touristy, so I’m already a little bit hesitant, but I love the idea of seeing the fountain early in the morning and late at night.

My second set of questions is about the trip from Sperlonga to Venice. I’d be interested in hearing suggestions for a route. I plan to rent a car. I would like to drive a few hours each day and be able to spend several hours in a small town vibe rather than big cities.

I’m not sure how much more detail to go into here as this is my first time in this forum. Looking forward to anybody’s advice! Thanks in advance!

I went to the Trevi Fountain about 10 days ago. No problem. ‘admission’ to the front of the fountain is controlled. Works very well
