Help: we leave to go to Italy sept 8, we will be returning to the USA on September 30th. I just received an alert about an air traffic strike on September 30 that will definitely impact our travel home.
We are flying American. I called them today September 6th to see about changing out flight to October 1, they wouldn’t do it, only for a fee of $350 per person. I explained I have my son with autism traveling with me and waiting at an airport for hours upon hours isn’t an option. I have travel insurance, but still it’s not covered unless there is a 6 hour delay.
I’m new to traveling, please advise what I should do? Maybe American will issue an alert, but that might not be till a few days before the 30th, if they do at all. If they do, American we change flight for free.

It's too far away for the airlines to do anything. They want to wait until they know for sure the strike will take place.
If that happens, AA usually sends out an alert that you can change your flight for free.
But until then, you just have to be patient.
