Seems pretty decent, and I feel like I will have enough time to wander on my own. I just need to buy plane tickets, which currently are running about 1400 USD each, so I have a fair watcher on them to see if I can get them for about 1000 USD each.

Your thoughts?

I don't have any advice, or thoughts as I haven't been to Italy yet but I was really surprised when I read your post because my husband and I are flying into Venice on the day! We are also planning on V - F - R.

Edit: For reference, like I said, we are flying into Venice on the exact same day from O'Hare in Chicago with a layover in Montreal. We already bought our tickets and they were $600 roundtrip per person. Our return flight is direct. Do you happen to have any date flexibility? That's really important when trying to get cheap flights.

Rather than the mad dash to Pompeii, go to Ostia Antica and give yourself a little more free time in Rome and not be roadkill the morning you do the Vatican/ Sistine tour.

Our dates can be flexible, although it seems the price is pretty much the same. I set a flight tracker last year to get an idea on ticket prices, and the best price was 972.00. I think I may can get slightly better by flying from a nearby airport ( 2 hrs away ) and am looking at that as an option.

My wife is so fascinated with Pompeii that it may be the only thing that is not an option for this trip. I agree those last two days are going to be a grind.

If you are interested in art, then go to the Academia and Uffizi in Florence. I liked them much better than the Academia in Venice (haven't been to the Guggenheim yet).

With Pompeii being a 'set in stone' requirement, I think I would flip-flop your 9-20 9-21 activities.

As it looks like all you are doing on Saturday is going to airport for your flight home, being pooped out from a long day really does not matter.
Doing a busy, fulfilling day, of activity you have outlined on Friday( 9-21), is not what I would want to do after the long day a trip to Pompeii is.

So swap Pompeii to Friday?

Yes

Entirely your choice, but now you have my $0.02
