We will be arriving in Rome. We want to go to the Amalfi Coast for a week
. What is the best way to get there? This is the first time we will travel in Italy independently. We are in our 70's and will have luggage.

How much luggage will you have, and is it a size and weight that you can easily handle on your own?

Is staying in Rome part of the plan? I would want to shake off the jet lag (presuming you are traveling far) before taking a train to Naples or Salerno. From there, I suggest booking a private driver to take you on to the coast (which town?). If you are determined to do it without paying a car service (about 100 euros), there are ferries (what month!) from Salerno to some Amalfi coast towns and a bus line along the coast.
