If one had only time to visit one of these ruins what would be most recommended.

We did both in a day with no problem (mind it was an excursion from the a cruise)but we only did the temples at Selinute not the rest of the site. I would pick Selinute - its on the coast and in addition to the temples you also have the acropolis and the rest of the town site which is right off the beach Looked like there would be a lot to explore there. Temples range from nearly complete to totally ruined. Segusta's temple is an unfinished shell. There is also a small theatre located on top of a nearby hill and some of the surrounding recently excsvated town. The view from the theatre across the Sicilian countryside is beautiful. Depends what you are intersted in - I regret we could not spend longer at Selinute and if I go to Sicily again I will go back there.

Segesta's temple is stunning and in a great setting. I suggest you google "images" for each site and pick which one you want to visit. I go to Segesta every time I go to Sicily. There's a bus to take you up to the theatre.

I have done both in less than a day. They are just 45 min. from each other by car.
