Selinunte and Villa Romana del Casale What to do about luggage?

We are traveling to Sicily for two weeks in May following a route similar to the one in Steve's Sicily guide book and would like to add stops on way to overnight stays. Everything we have read says don't leave luggage in your rental car.

Is there is a way to store luggage at or close to sites?

We were worried about safety of cars at Villa Romana del Casale until we entered the large parking lots. There were many buses parked in the lot with their drivers standing outside. There were other older men in the lot who looked they were guards.
We already had dropped off our luggage at a hotel near Selinunte before parking there.

I think this is something that has been overplayed, especially at Villa Romana. Like anywhere else, just don’t leave anything visible in the car or load it all in your trunk in plain sight where you park. Maybe the extra caution is because it’s not paid parking, so anyone can pull in or out. But Villa Romana is a hugely popular, busy site. I can’t imagine anyone would do a smash & grab robbery there.

We left our luggage in the trunk at Villa Romana del Casale. There were four of us and we made sure our bags were covered in the trunk before leaving our hotel in Ragusa and we did not take anything out of the trunk once we arrived. We carried on our persons our passports and anything else we could not afford to lose e.g. medication. As Suki noted, there are lots of bus drivers hanging around and the parking lot was not exposed. We had no issues.

We had no issue at either place. Nothing was in sight and we didn’t open the hatchback after parking preventing any prying eyes from knowing something was there.

Even in the United States, I follow the same rules. Leave everything covered in a trunk or hatchback, and once you arrive in your destination, do not open the trunk or the hatchback.
Bring your wallet etc. with you.
