So-one of my 'dreams' is to drive through the Italian countryside, (less traffic?), on a mo-ped, (slower than a Vespa), stopping at approximately 3 wineries for tastings and lunch. We will be staying in Sorrento in September 2017 and am hoping to make this dream a reality. I will be with 3 others. We are older, but healthy and spry, (I have 59 years). Please offer advice?
I don't believe that any location within mo-ped or Vespa distance of Sorrento could be described as having less traffic. This area has the worst traffic I've experienced in Italy. Even if the other drivers weren't enough to worry about, drinking as you go doesn't sound like a good plan, either.
I should have been more clear. How about taking a taxi or other transport outside of the city proper? And beginning in the countryside. No? Your point is well taken, Laura. Thank you. Perhaps the itinerary should be changed to lemon groves?
Do a Google search for "wine tour sorrento area" to see lots of options. And, yes, mopeds + wine + Sorrento roads/traffic = accident waiting to happen. You don't want to do this as a self-guided tour.
Mopeds + anything = very, very dangerous.
Every year, many tens of thousands of tourists' trips end with serious, painful, life-changing (or life-ending) moped accidents. The notion of zooming around on a Vespa may seem very romantic and carefree, but in truth this is incredibly risky (even if you take alcohol and Amalfi Coast traffic out of the equation). Romantic, maybe. Carefree? Only if you're in denial, young, foolish or some combination.
Get a driver, even get a red convertible if you like. But skip the moped part of your fantasy. That way you can enjoy the wine and really be care-free (and come home in one piece to talk about it).
Lemon grove tours will inevitably bring you to the limoncello table - not good on a moped.
Why not schedule a private tour that will pick you up and bring you back safely?
I shall heed all advice and nix the moped. Thank you all. BTW- Love the hired driver and convertible idea!
