After reading RS guides for Florence and Rome, we are considering using a guide for the Vatican and self guided walking tours for most other places, but would appreciate advice on the wisdom of this plan. Thanks in advance,
Betty

Betty, I think this depends on what interests you the most. The vatican museum is pretty much all artwork. Where the colleseum and forum are all history. We opted to do the Vatican museum on our own, but got a guided tour for the forum and colleseum. I'm a history lover. I like art, but to me it's not nearly as interesting as the history of a place. I felt like it was money well spent. One thing I think Rick is really good at in his guide books is pointing out the highlights in the big art museums. For me this is enough, but it's hard to go to someplace like the colleseum and get the most out of it without a private guide or doing extensive research on my own first.
We liked the Angel Tours in Rome -- not as polished as some but like the enthusiasm of the young art students. Goggle -- Angel Tour and Rome.
There were 3 of us who were separated from our RS tour group while in the Vatican Museum. We didn't feel like we missed anything. We looked and wondered and enjoyed. I am not sure I would have felt that way had I not been with the guide for the Colosseum and Forum. I really needed the backround and history for the Colosseum and Forum.
