How can I buy tickets? It's so confusing and the Gallery website sends you to a bunch of expensive tour groups. Also, I can't seem to be able to select the date I want. It's a Tuesday so should be good. Could they be closed in second half of September or something? Trying to book for September 17th of this year.

It looks as if they have not opened ticket sales beyond September 15th as of now.
If you want a tour, it looks as if there are 4 guided tours in English…at 9 and 11am and 3 and 5pm.
If you do not want a tour, you choose the 2 hour slot you want.
Audio guides can be hired next to the Ticket Office.
For reference, I bought out tickets to the Borghese on 8/17/23 for our visit on 10/26/23. We did not sign up for a tour nor did we utilize the audio guides and we were fine.

I'm guessing you weren't using the official website. As jconsol said, you couldn't buy tickets as they are only on sale through September 15th. Their tours, should you want one of those, are reasonably priced at 25 euro (including reservation fee) per adult.
No idea when Sept 17 tickets will be available as the ticketing vendor hasn't been releasing them on a consistant schedule lately. Just check daily to see when the date you want shows as active for purchase?

As a side note, the link below is for the museum's official info website; it has a portal that connects to the ticketing site linked above if you click on the pink "Buy" on top right of the page but you can skip the two-click process to get there by just going directly to ticketing via the links provided. This site is only accessible during the hours, Rome time, the museum is open but ticketing is "up" 24/7.
