Segway Tour

We are considering adding a segway tour while in Rome. Has anyone tried the segway tours? If so, do you have any recommendations on vendors, where to rent the machines, warnings on what to avoid or experiences you would like to share? Thank you! Mary

Mary, Yes, I've taken Segway Tours in Paris and Prague. I had so much fun on them in Prague last year, that I booked a second tour immediately after the first. That's something I'll definitely be trying on my next visit to Rome. I'm not sure how many vendors there are in Rome, but you could have a look at Rome Segway Tours. I do have a few "warnings on what to avoid". To begin with, don't become too overconfident on the machines, as that can lead to "painful problems". I saw two examples of that on my tours in Prague last year. In one case up the hill near Prague Castle, one of the women lost control of the machine and drove it over a bank. Her husband was tasked with going to retrieve it, which required some exertion! In the second case, a somewhat "cocky" individual (about half my age) became a bit too confident and drove into a sidewalk cafe, possibly breaking a finger in the process (I warned him!). I'm quite comfortable on a Segway and didn't need to take part in the orientation session for the second tour. I can "zip along" quite nicely, but I know my limitations. The machines are equipped with speed limiters, which the Guides can set, depending on the ability of the rider. It's a bit of an expensive way to see European cities, but it sure beats walking! The Segway Transporters are a lot of fun. Happy travels!

We did a Segway tour in Florence. It was a great way to see all the key sights (just from the sidewalks/streets, not inside) with a guided tour in about 3+ hours. There were only 4 of us on the tour. There are headphones in your helmut so you can clearly hear the tour. Since we only planned on one full day in Florence, I was looking for a tour that only had a few people instead of a very large group. Then I came across the Segway Tour and thought it would be fun. Since this was day 10 on our vacation with a lot of daily walking, the two blisters that had appeared a few days before really needed a break from walking, so that was a bonus. It took all of about 30 seconds to get used to maneuvering the Segway. Since Florence was flat, we didn't experience any hills, and just people, not traffic.
