Segesta vs Favignana

We will be in Sicily in September. With 4 full days in Trapani we want to visit Erice, and can’t decide between Segesta or Favignana for another day trip. Favignana sounds nice but I’m not too comfortable riding a bike around the island and Segesta seems totally doable from Trapani via bus. Curious to hear opinions to help us choose.

TIA

Hi diane, You didn’t say if you would be visiting other ruins in Sicily such as those at Agrigento or Selinunte nor if your four days in Trapani is just one part of a longer visit in Sicily. If not seeing other Roman and Greek sites then I would choose Segesta over Favignana. A relaxing beach day at Favignana could be a nice break from many days of fast paced siteseeing but if your time in Sicily is short then I suggest Segesta. Segesta is an iconic, not to be missed site in my opinion. I have been there twice. You mentioned you could get there by bus from Trapani. Make sure you check bus schedules carefully and where exactly the bus stop is located and the frequency of runs. Segesta is not in a town and there is not much nearby. There is a small concession stand at the site where you purchase your tickets. Also if by any chance you are thinking of going on a Sunday make sure the bus runs on Sunday and not on a reduced schedule. Be prepared for uphill walking at Segesta. You have to walk up steps cut into the hillside to see the beautiful Greek temple. There is a bus that takes you up and near to the area of Roman ruins and the amphitheater. Views from the amphitheater are very panoramic. (If you are interested in temples and it works into your itinerary, consider the beautiful archeological site at Selinunte. Lots of temples and ruins to explore right next to the sea. ) Erice is lovely, you will like it. The day I went it was rainy and foggy and gave it an eerie ambience but too foggy to see those tremendous views looking at the coastline below. I have cousins that live in a small town outside of Palermo and they have told me that Favignana is very beautiful and recommended I go but I didn’t have time to get there.

Thanks for your insight Pat. We start our 21 day trip in Trapani, then Palermo, then Agrigento, Ragusa, Ortygia, Taormina and fly out of Catania. So, yes we will see the ruins in Agrigento. Also, I’m sure we will also visit lots of beaches. There lies the confusion. Such problems to have. 😂
