Seeking Opinions--Photography-Trip Destination

I am looking for opinions/suggestions for a future trip. Here are my for-sure parameters so far...

  1. Italy, in mid/late February, 9 nights on the ground.
  2. As noted, photography (architectural/landscape) is primary reason for trip.
  3. Maximum of one mid-trip move (so wherever I am the night before my flight home must be taxi-ride close to an airport.)
  4. As car-free an area/town/city as possible

I have done 9 nights in Venice, and could go back there over and over, but am wondering about other options. My current thoughts are along the lines of Siena/Florence, or Orvieto/Rome, but would love to hear the ideas of others. Thank you!

I think it would be wonderful to get to photograph Venice during foggy conditions, which are more likely to occur that time of year.

Not sure about how close the airport is for these cities but, instead of a tax,i you may be better off with a train or metro.

At his time of year the days will be short and you will have to make the most of the morning / evening sun. I would suggest travel between cities be mid day, early am (before sunrise) or late evening (after sunset). Both Sienna and Oriveto are small enough that you could photograph them in two full days with the evening the day you arrive and the morning of the day you leave. Both Rome and Florence have more than enough sites to occupy the balance of your time.

Florence is small so you can do most of it by foot. You want to stay in the historical area so you can step out the door and be there. I climbed the Bell Tower instead of the Cathedral Dome because I wanted the dome in my photographs.

Rome is quite large and unless you have zeroed in on a specific area to photograph you probably would want to stay near a metro stop. You should check out the times the monuments / building are lit at that time of year. Photographing them just after sunset gives you some light in the sky to balance the brightly lit buildings. If you are interested in photographing inside the Vatican Museum, and are in Rome on a Friday night, check to see if evening tours are available in February (much smaller crowds). Do not worry about the Sistine Chapel as no photography is allowed there (they are VERY serious about this).

The above is based on a 30 day trip I took to Italy two years ago.

Have you considered Sicily as another option?

Thank you all for the input!

I agree about the fog and Venice--I will definitely go back to try to catch some days/evenings when it has rolled in.

Yes, agree about the short days/longer "golden hours" that time of year--that's not by mistake :-). I have spent, total, about 2 weeks in Rome already, and if going there, would probably stay in the more southerly area of Trastevere (roughly around Santa Cecilia) or in Monti. Have also spent 3 nights in Florence, and a day-trip to Siena.

I had not thought of Sicily--and specific cities/towns/areas you could recommend?

Palermo has some great architecture and is close to Monreale, Erice, Cefalu and Greek ruins of Segesta. Poke around some Google Images of different areas and see what you think. This is a decent website for Sicily although I used Lonely Planet and other books for planning my trip: http://www.bestofsicily.com/top12.htm
