I'm not sure how many are with you which will affect cost, and you will definately be able to find a better price than this, but we stayed at the Hotel Orion located right behind St. Mark's Square. We were only there one night and therefore didn't attempt to find the "major sites" so not sure how close or far some are, but the distance to St. Mark's Square can't be beat. It's sit on a very narrow street (and I use the word loosly) surrounded by local shops and a bakery and nice little restaurants. Loves the atmosphere of that area. And nothing like walking back to your hotel through St. Mark's Square at night. The only issue I had were the narrow steps leading upstairs to the rooms, but the room itself was large and spacious and nicely decorated, and overlooked the narrow "street" that I loved. The smell of baking goods was a plus too!

Thank you. Hotel Orion looks great but no availability. Take care.

We stayed at Casa Santa Maria Formosa, which is right on the edge of Campo Santa Maria Formosa. I loved the location; out of the tourist throng, but about 7-minute walk to San Marco. I think it would be in your price range.

I agree with Gail. My wife and I just stayed at the Hotel Al Piave. A little out of the way, but we have visited Venice 5 times and this is our favorite place. The folks are great, so is the breakfast, and it is quiet at night. The airconditioning also worked very well.

La Calcina in the Dorsoduro. Very close to everything, yet a quiet corner. Charming historic building (no elevators) and great staff.

Thanks, everyone. We are going to be staying at Venice Resorts in the Santa Croce district. We are late in finding something reasonable more in the center, but this seems fine. I really appreciate everyone's feedback. Safe travels, Julie
