Seeking Drawings by Italian Masters

If anyone knows of a museum collection of original drawings located in either Rome or Florence, please share the information. I've been searching the net and scanning literature but so far, no luck.

Hi Sherry. You could try contacting some universities with big art history departments - the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana is one; University of Texas at Austin is another; University of Indiana at Bloomington is a third. What kind of original drawings are you interested in (i.e. Renaissance, 19th-century, etc.; or by a specific artist)? Find the art history faculty page on the universities' websites and contact the professor of the appropriate period. They should be able to help you.

What an interesting question. I've been to lots of museums in Rome, the main ones in Florence, and various museums across the country. I don't remember seeing any original drawings other than the occasional one-off. (There's a Mantegna in Padova of a Madonna that's incredibly moving.) Lots of finished paintings and sculptures, of course, but no drawings. Good luck.
