Seeking advice on traveling to & from Volterra by bus & train

Getting to Volterra from Siena by bus doesn't seem to be a challenge. I understand from Rick's book there is a transfer in Colle Val d'Elsa. However leaving Volterra on a Saturday headed for Lucca really looks like a problem. Can you take a train from Saline to Cecina? On a weekend? Or is it better to take the bus to Cecina or Pontedera, then the train on to Pisa & eventually Lucca? Wow!

Ray, www.trenitalia.com shows a train run from Volterra to Cecina. I'm looking at a Saturday schedule. When I check the train stops, the first stop says Volterra-Saline-Pomerance so I'm not sure where the train station is located. If this looks like a good train run, you can change trains in Cecina for Pisa and Lucca.
