Seeing St. Peter's Basilica after the Vatican Museums

Hello friends,

I recently booked 5 tickets for the Vatican Museums at 8:00 in July via www.museivaticani.va. I am curious how to best integrate seeing St. Peter's Basilica after this tour while avoiding long lines as much as possible. Assuming our tour ends at approximately 10:30, are there St. Peter's Basilica tours you would suggest booking so that we can avoid lines? Or should we plan to just get in line for St. Peter's immediately after our tour?

I visited a long time ago in 2012 peak summer season, and I recall we walked right into to St. Peter's pretty easily after our tour. But want to plan ahead to account for crowds and lines.

Thank you!

Shannon

Where does your Vatican tour end? Ours ended in St. Peter’s and we were allowed to just stay, no need to leave. We had a St Peter’s tour booked 2 days later and we still had to wait in the security line. There was no charge to enter. Our tour was with a Seminarian from the college, still had to wait about an hour. This was in February 2017.

Crowds and long lines are likely throughout your visit to the Museum and St. Peter’s. One suggestion I have seen is to head for the Sistine Chapel first, and then St Peters, but then you cannot get back into the Museum. If it’s a guided tour you may be able to use the “back door” entry to the Basilica from the Chapel but this is not guaranteed. Be prepared for heat and crowds; sounds like Italy is jam packed this year.
