Security lines in Rome

My family and I are traveling in June from Naples to Rome and Rome to Boston (coming home from a visit). I wonder whether we will have to go through a security line after landing in Terminal 1 and going to Terminal 3 for the flight home. A second slog through security could affect our making the Rome-Boston flight. Do we stay airside in Rome or do we have to pass out and in again? Thank you!

If changing from Terminal 1 to 3 you will have to go through security and immigration or passport exit since you are leaving the Schengen zone.

Haven't done this transfer in Rome in a few years, but after landing at FCO you will have to go through security again between T1 and T3. It is not the same security line as passengers who depart and check-in in Rome (in other words you should go through a "connecting flight' lines, so it should be shorter and quicker than the line for those who are departing from Rome (at least in my now out-to-date experience).

In addition, since you will be exiting the Schengen area, you will also go through passport control. That line is not generally long at all like when you arrive. I presume you are flying Alitalia from NAP to FCO (since that's the only option) and transferring to another Alitalia flight to BOS. Unless there are major delays in your incoming flight, I can assure you that Alitalia will make sure you make that flight.
