Security Lines for Flight

W are traveling July 19 from Dulles to Rome. Our plane lands at 5:30am and second flight leaves at 7:15am, so it is early in the day. The flight is on Lufthansa with a connection in Frankfurt, also on Lufthansa. Our connection is 1hr50m. I am hearing the horror stories about this new system and wonder if I should contact Lufthansa to see about getting a later flight to Rome? Do we have to collect our bags in Frankfurt or would they go straight through to Rome? Do we go through this security in Frankfurt or when we arrive in Rome? Any information and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

By "this new system" I believe you are referring to the EES, which is Immigration, not security. If your connecting flights are on a single ticket then you will pick up your luggage in Rome. You will go through security after Passport Control. In theory you will have time, but Frankfurt is a huge airport. No one can predict back ups or delays. If you are uncomfortable with the current connection time, then see if you can change to a later flight.

No bags should be checked thru to Rome, assuming this is all on one ticket. Just make sure of that when you check your bags.

You will go thru Passport control/EES in Frankfurt

1 hr 50 min should be enough time as long as your flight from IAD is on time. Lufthansa is responsible for getting you to Rome so if anything goes awry they will put you on next flight to Rome that has availability.

This has been a frequent question on here about EES and everyone is having different experiences. Please know the options others are giving you if you miss your connection. Here is the link for wait times but note there’s a time difference. You also might note the red banner currently going across the top “High passenger volumes expected”…good luck!

Just head directly to immigration / passport control & don't stop along the way. There's no security check in FRA. As others have said, you should be fine, assuming your flight it on time. Your LH flight is so early in the day, it's easy for them to get you onto a later flight. When I've missed a connection in FRA, I look up the new flight on the LH app. Usually you're automatically re-booked and unless you really don't like the connection, no need to even speak with anyone. But there's an LH travel desk also. Good luck!

The key is airside transfer -- you don't go through immigration with those arriving in Germany -- you stay behind security and do whatever formalities along the airside transfer path. Usually immigration at the first port and customs at the final destination -- but at the transfer port you stay airside and only go through formalities with others also transferring not the hoards entering Frankfurt.

To clarify, you do go through immigration in Frankfurt, as that is where you enter the Schengen zone.

Your bags will be checked through to Rome.

No one knows if your flight will arrive on time or if there will be delays with the ESS. Honestly, don't worry about it. You'll get to Rome.

No bags should be checked thru to Rome

This should read, "No, bags should be checked to Rome." An "eats shoots and leaves" thing.

Only US requires one to retrieve one's bags and recheck after customs upon first arrival, IME. It's a real annoyance for west coast Americans who travel regularly to Europe.
