Security at airport

Can I get through customs in Italy with almonds and blueberries in ziplock bags? I know I can leave the United States with them.

Your header says security which there isn't on the arrival/debarkation end.

Assuming you mean customs as stated, all you're going to get are anecdotal replies unless somebody's an Italian agricultural expert. The safe way to handle it is to walk through the 'stuff to declare' lane and ask them. You don't have a lot of bucks or effort at risk, there's no penalty for asking and giving up goods but there is for sneaking around, and those guys don't have much to do anyway. It's not going to slow you down five minutes.

sage,

I'm not an Italian agricultural expert, but I suspect that the almonds will be acceptable when you arrive in Italy, but the blueberries probably not.

Why in the world will you be wanting to take almonds and blueberries to Italy? Don"t you think those things are available there?

I agree with Ken; almonds will be fine but I doubt blueberries will be (unless perhaps they're dried). I actually took little baggies of almonds & trail mix to Italy last year (got them at Trader Joe's & took them for snacks while in transit & to throw in my backpack while out touring during the day when I didn't want to stop & buy snacks). I had no problems with the almonds but, I suspect that fruit is a totally different ball game & you'll probably be asked to discard them.

Should be no problem as no ones even going to check your things. We flew from San Jose with a layover in Paris then onto Venice. They stamped our passports in Paris and that was it. No questions, no customs check. Once we got to Venice, there were no customs check because Venice is part of the EU and we came from Paris.

Exit thorough the "Nothing to Declare" gate.

I don't think blueberries are endangered:
"You may carry animals or plants - including parts thereof - when you are travelling in EU countries. But most EU countries do have strict rules on transporting endangered species or products derived from them. You may need a permit to travel with some species.

"To find out about a specific species, you should always check the EU wildlife trade reference database. You can also contact the CITES authority in your country to know if the species you want to travel with needs a certificate.

How about you just eat the blueberries on the plane. They won't look so good anyway after the overnight flight. The almonds won't give you any problem. Don't look guilty, just walk through
