We will be in Portofino for the day via a cruise ship in September and walked the town three years ago. Wondering what recommendations you have for making this stop exciting such as going to another city nearby, hiking, etc?

Go to Santa Margherita and nearby Camogli for a perfect day. SML is the next town on the Portofino Peninsula.

You can walk from Portofino to Santa Margherita, which we did and enjoyed it. Wished we'd had more time to explore the latter. We stayed in Camogli and loved it.

Take a local boat around to the other side of the peninsula to San Fruttuoso...tiny little village clinging to the rocks around a small bay. There is a fairly famous statue of Jesus under the water of the bay. The best plate of sheep-cheese pasta I have ever eaten was consumed in the restaurant overlooking the bay.
You can also walk up through the olive orchards around to the right of the main beach. There is a beautiful little castle up there (the movie Enchanted April was filmed there - one of my faves!) and you can look down onto the decks of the bazillion-dollar yachts to see how the other half lives.
