We had planned an overnight in Tirano after the 4 hour express ride from Chur Switzerland, After I watched a walking video of Tirano it kind of soured me on spending from noon till the next morning before we head on to Milan to catch a Freccia to Verona. Now I am thinking maybe have lunch in Tirano then train a bit further. Not more than an hour hopefully. I was looking at Chronotrains and then Gmaps sat view and most of the stops along the way toward Lake Como from Tirano looked like whistle stops not really places to explore for a few hours before hitting a hotel for the night. Any suggestions for a prettier town to overnight that's less than 1 hour past Tirano? I see, Sondrio @ 30m past and Colico at 1hr past tirano. I'm thinking 30 minutes further on a train might be the most anyone in the group would want to tackle after a 4+ hour ride on the Bernina. Thoughts on the best overnight stop with nice walking areas?
It is a little further, a little less than an hour and a half from Tirano, but Varenna is a beautiful little town on Lake Como It would be a great place to stop overnight
Tirano, Italy does look like a rather bleak landscape for an overnight stay. There is a hotel at the Alp Grum summit where the trains stop between Pontresina and Tirano in a spectacular setting with panoramic views and hikes nearby to Lake Palu. It’s called the “Albergo Ristorante Alp Grum.”
Pontresina, Switzerland—just a few miles beyond St. Moritz— is often recommended as a good place to overnight. It’s close to the midpoint of the Bernina Express route.
Another vote for Varenna. Some people on this forum have said that Bellano, which is a little closer to Tirano on the same train line and less popular than Varenna, is also pretty and nice.
