I was wondering if anyone from Seattle has any input for buying plane tickets to Rome. I've been doing some research on prices which seem to be in the lower $1000 range currently. Is this the average/normal price? I'm traveling in January so I assume prices would drop lower. I'm going to keep watching but I wanted to know about how much other people have paid just so I have a better idea for my research.
If by "lower $1000 range" you mean under $1100, then yeah, that's a good price. International airfares really went up this year. We paid $1300 for May for Seattle to Venice via Amsterdam, and Rome to Seattle via Amsterdam. What airline are you looking at? We flew Delta, through Amsterdam.
The $1,000 price is reasonable for that time of year from the West coast.
Agree with Bob. $1000+ is in line with what I'd pay from SFO to Italy in January. My ticket to Italy last July (from SFO) was about $1,700 just to make a comparison with peak time.
Thank you everyone for your input! Michael - I'm looking at any and all airlines right now. And yes, I meant around $1000-$1300. I found a few flights for $976 but the travel time is anywhere from 21-40 hours each way...and I'm not particularly fond of that. I originally had a plan to go from Seattle > Dublin > Rome (Dublin to Rome via RyanAir/EasyJet/etc.) which should cost roughly $800 but I'm not sure if I should risk it, in case of delayed flights and such.
"I originally had a plan to go from Seattle > Dublin > Rome (Dublin to Rome via RyanAir/EasyJet/etc.) which should cost roughly $800 but I'm not sure if I should risk it, in case of delayed flights and such." Good for you for being aware of the risk, particularly in winter. I'd only do this if I wanted to spend at least a day in Dublin on the way back. Otherwise, if you miss your connection there, you would have to buy a last minute ticket from Dublin to Seattle, which will more than eat up any saving. On the way there, the risk is less; a last minute ticket from Dublin to Rome will not be cheap, but it won't be 4 figures. Yes, airfares have gone up substantially compared to those of a few years ago.
I've heard so many horror stories about RyanAir that I would avoid it. They do all sorts of hidden fees, like for luggage, that can end up adding hundreds to the airfare. Try hipmunk.com for flight options. That website sorts the flights by "Agony" which factors in layovers, costs, number of legs, etc.
